Radiology Technologist Job Description
Radiology technologists, also commonly referred to as x-ray techs, produces x-ray films for patients which are then used for diagnostic purposes.
A radiology technologist isn’t responsible for the same duties as an x-ray technologist, who is responsible for more advanced imaging. However, following are some of the most specific tasks that a radiology tech is responsible for:
- Preparing patients for x-rays to be taken, including explaining how the procedure will be done, positioning the patient and the x-ray machine, and utilizing protection devices to protect the patient and the radiology technologist from excess radiation
- Properly operating x-ray equipment
- Adjusting the x-ray machine as needed
- Keeping patient records and maintaining them for assured accuracy
- Following all protocol and safety regulations
- Using a wide variety of machinery in order to produce medical scans, which could include x-rays, MRIs, CT scans, mammograms, and sonograms
- Tracking organs’ functioning by using radioactive dye
- Making sure that equipment is maintained and up to par
- Making sure that equipment gets repaired if needed
Radiology technologists typically work in diagnostic imagining centers or hospitals.
It’s important to note that successful radiology technologists have the following characteristics, skills, or abilities:
- Ability to compassionately perform patient care
- Good patient relations
- Strict attention to detail
- Good eyesight, needed in order to properly read scans
- Ability to follow very specific instructions given by physicians
Radiology Technologist Training & Education
In order to become a radiology technologist, you will need to have the proper training and certification. Most radiology technologists earn an associates degree in radiography from a community college or vocational school.
This type of program takes two years. The most important thing to remember is to be sure and choose a program that’s accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology.
While it’s certainly not a requirement, many radiology techs find that they get a benefit over their job competition by earning a bachelor’s degree in radiology or a related field.
You can get radiology certification through the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists. This may be required if your desired position requires performing more advanced x-ray screenings. Certification involves passing a certification exam while also meeting the registry’s education requirements. Being certified is another thing that will make you stand out from the competition when you’re seeking employment.
Radiology Technologist Salary Range
In 2020, the average annual salary for a radiology technologist was $60,166. These wages are very good, especially for an entry-level position. Also, it’s important to note that there is plenty of room for potential growth for a person who is in the radiology technologist position.
According to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, this position is expected to grow at a rate of 9% between 2018 and 2028.
